One of my favorite vegan designers is making headlines for her commitment to do less harm to the environment. Fresh from her Paris Fashion Week, celebrity and royal favorite Stella McCartney presented a faux fur item made with plant based materials.

This is a huge, because while faux fur is ethical, it’s reportedly not so great for the environment. Much of the faux fur out there is made from synthetic materials, such as polyester or acrylic (which not new to the fashion world). These materials are basically plastic and we all know the negative impact plastic is having on our environment. But more and more designers, including McCartney, are finding ways use sustainable materials to create faux fur items.

According to VegNews, the Koba fur free fur used for the McCartney coat were developed by Ecopel, which creates high end faux fur for more than 300 top fashion brands that have moved away from using real fur. Unlike other faux furs, this material (which includes recycled polyester) emits less greenhouse gas and can be recycled.

As a vegan and huge animal advocate, McCartney (daughter of legendary musician Paul McCartney and the late Linda McCartney) launched her design house, which was the first luxury vegan brand, in 2001. In 2017, she vowed to use more sustainable materials in her designs. McCartney’s recent Paris show is said to be her most sustainable collection ever. Her designs are exquisitely made and have graced countless red carpets.

Last year, addition dressing Lady Oprah and Amal Clooney at the wedding of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle, McCartney also dressed Markle herself for post wedding celebration.

Well she hasn’t dressed me, yet 😉… but I do own a small collection of her accessories (which I will share in a later post). Look… they are expensive, but it’s luxury and you do get what you pay for. Her items are exquisitely made and are comparable to those from top designers.

So the next time you go shopping for an investment piece that is well made, look for that Stella McCartney label. She’s doing good, while making great fashion.
