Before I became a vegan 4 years ago, I had never heard of nutritional yeast. I quickly learned it is a rock star in the vegan culinary world.

I discovered nutritional yeast after researching ways to get protein while eating vegan. I learned that not only is it a great source of protein (55%), it is also very good for you. It has a substantial amount of B complex vitamins, including B12. It also contains essential minerals and Beta-glucan, which boosts your immune system. It’s high in fiber, low in sodium and probably my favorite thing… its anti aging.

So what exactly is nutritional yeast? Well it is not like traditional yeast. It is an organism that is grown on molasses. It is deactivated and turned into a flaky powder that has a slight nutty flavor.

I sprinkle it on popcorn, on top of spaghetti and other pasta dishes, and I use it in a variety of recipes. I use it so much, I keep some on my desk at work next to my hot sauce.

So if you are new to vegan eating and worried about getting protein, give nutritional yeast a try. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you.
